I pulled and checked fuses and relays before I replaced the starter and the shifter selection indicator on the dash started flashing a mash up of all the possible gear selections. When you go to install the new one, line up the the bolt holes by looking at the dirt outline, you need to get it lined up right or it wont work right. Here is a pic for reference.
