Since the transitioned the year from 1939-1940 with the "Z" suffix, the gun was probably made very late in 1939. This gun started life as a DWM Commercial Luger (c/N proof) and sometime--probably in the early 30s--it was reworked and proofed by the Heeres Zeugamt (weapons depot) at Spandau (SU25) for military use. The absence of "nazi" markings on the luger in no way relates to the story, just that the pistol began its service in WWI, served under the Weimar republic, and quite likely until the end of WWII.
