Removing the screen on them can cause very real losses, depending on the model. That does NOT apply to the KLR. Same thing with air filters. You have a narrower head, a different balancer system, two timing chains to our one, more power. My suggestion would be to REMOVE the carburetor completely, disassenble it and thoroughly clean it.A well sorted KLR is fine for riding up logging roads and back country routes. And if I do any camping, I can haul a lot more comfortable sleeping equipment on it (I also need a thick air mattress for these bones!). But if I want to cover 500-1000 miles of superslab in a day, a touring bike is the best tool.
