LE BAR AUX FOLIES-BERGÈRE. Oil on Canvas. 47 x 56 cm. 1881. Lochard, n° 265. Sketch for the painting in the Courtauld Collection, n° 388. On the Lochard Photograph, n° 265, we see that the counter was not painted originally. It was later added by a foreign hand. The dimensions were also changed.
This picture was Manet’s last major work, exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1882. Manet knew the Folies-Bergère well. He made preparatory sketches on site, but the final painting was executed in his studio. He set up a bar and employed one of the barmaids, Suzon, to pose behind it.
