To make it even weirder the app charges $1.55 then the store wants another $5.79. The $1.55 would be the cost of the happy hour soda and tax on the whole total. Sounds like a glitch in the app.

The $3 item that's free is still free and they're getting the add on fees so they aren't losing anything extra. But they decided to play hardball for some reason. So now I make sure to get the most expensive reward item as opposed to the mid tier item so they are slightly losing.
